Although 240,000 women joined the SS by marrying one of Himmler’s elite they did not do so in a perfunctory manner or as a matter of routine. They knew what the function and duties of the SS entailed. The majority of SS wives may have been poorly educated, but they were not entirely ignorant of the primary aim of the organization, which was to subjugate and enslave the ‘inferior races’ in the occupied East.
They were aware too of their own subordinate role in the ‘natural hierarchy of the sexes’, as defined by the SS magazine Das Schwarze Korps, issue 13:
The man is assigned naturally the spiritual direction of the family; he founds it, he leads it, he fights for it, he defends it. By contrast, the woman gives the family the inner attitude, she gives it soul; in quiet, rarely noticed fulfilment of her duties she upholds what the man created and builds the quiet motive in the family relationship.
Her duty as a ‘hero mother’ in the ‘racial battle’ was to nurture the future warriors and galvanize their resolve to fight and sacrifice themselves for the Fatherland; in doing so, she would find her true worth and destiny. It was a nonsensical romantic fantasy more in keeping with one of Richard Wagner’s operas than reality and it is unlikely that every SS wife took it very seriously, but it was worth feigning allegiance to such a cause to obtain the material benefits of belonging to the SS community. After all, had Himmler not promised every loyal wife that she would rule as queen over a feudal paradise in the East when the war was won? And who among them could imagine that they would not do so?
